Easing In: How We Fared After One Week of Oil Pulling
Day one left some of us gagging. But as the week went on, we were all rather comfortable with swishing oil around our mouths for 20 minutes or so every morning.
As you may know, four of us on the Boka team are trying oil pulling for a month. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic oral care method that aims to freshen breath and improve oral health by pulling out bad microorganisms that can cause a host of problems in your mouth. The practice is very trendy now, but there isn’t a lot of modern research on the topic, so we’re documenting our real-life experiences with it through weekly updates.
Have we noticed any differences?
Results run the gamut so far. Katie hasn’t noticed much of anything, but the other pullers say their teeth’s texture is changing for the better and their teeth might be getting a bit whiter, too.
Becky: “I’m really liking oil pulling so far. I swear my teeth are whiter and they even look less translucent. I have had a lot of dental problems and was not blessed with strong enamel, so to find a way to make them look better that doesn’t involve scraping or using chemicals to strip something off of them is really exciting for me.”
Ashleigh: “I think my teeth feel smoother, and I could probably imagine them to be whiter, if pressed. In general, I think it’ll take longer than a week to note any firm differences.”
Does it suck, or are we getting used to it?
Swishing off-tasting oils around in your mouth for 20 minutes each morning can put a snag in your morning routine. However, all four pullers are getting used to it after just one week—even Eric, who has to get his kids ready every morning while he swishes.
Eric: “One week in, I don’t necessarily find it any easier to fit oil pulling into my life, so it must not be a habit yet. That said, if I can find a way to pantomime, ‘Teeth!’ and ‘Hair!’ to my five-year-old with a mouth full of oil in the morning, just about anyone can likely find a way to fit it into their morning regimen.”
Ashleigh: “I actually find myself looking forward to it, because it makes me feel like I’m doing something good for my mouth (in addition to using killer oral care products).”
Our team has learned a bit of advice worth sharing:
- Start small, if you need to. Ashleigh still hasn’t made it up to 20 minutes, but she is adding a minute to her regimen every day.
- Find what works for you. Katie has switched oils a couple times and landed on coconut as her favorite, saying its taste is the mildest.
- Customize your regimen. Ashleigh has started warming her coconut oil first to improve its texture. She also adds a couple drops of organic peppermint essential oil to make it taste better. Becky, who’s using Cocowhite, found that pre-portioned tube work best for her: “I think I’ve had an easier experience than some others because of how the Cocowhite tubes are portioned and flavored to taste good. They’re also portable, so it’s easy to bring them on airplanes, which is nice since I travel a lot.”
